FAQs on Blogs and
Personal Web Site Uploads
What's the difference between a blog and a regular Web site?
A regular Web site is often static, while a blog is designed to be updated regularly (as often as several times a day). It's helpful to think of blogs as newspapers or newsletters where readers can go to get the latest information on a company, idea, concept. Sometimes, blogs as simple as musings from the blog's owner. In many ways, blogs have helped the Internet reach it's full potential by giving everyone the power to broadcast their thoughts and ideas to a global audience.
Aren't there sites where I can get a blog for free?
Yes. There are dozens of companies that offer you the ability to publish your blog for free -- including Google's
Blogspot.com,
Wordpress.com and
Livejournal.com. It's important to note, however, that you won't have your own domain name when you use free services like those listed above.
Your web address will be something like, "http://mywebsite.wordpress.com". That's a mouthful, and it's something that will make it difficult for users to remember. When you purchase your own domain and hosting account, you're be able to publish your blog on your own domain (i.e. "http://mysite.com" not "http://mysite.wordpress.com").
How much does a domain name and hosting account cost?
Domain names that end in ".com" typically cost about $6 per year. Hosting accounts can cost anywhere from $4 a month for a site with a very limited number of visitors to $99 or more for a site that streams video or has thousands of visitors a day. Centerville Web Design
offers hosting at a cost of $8.99 a month.
What is hosting and why do I have to pay for it?
Internet hosting services provide space on a web server for you to store the files that your users will access when they type in your web address. If you chose not to use a hosting service, you'll have to build and maintain your own Internet server (which is a difficult and expensive task compared to the relatively low-cost of paying someone else to maintain your server for you).
Do I have to have a domain name before I build my blog?
Yes, but if you're thinking about picking one, and you haven't decided yet,
email us, and we'll send your our pdf e-book, "
How to Pick Domain Names that Generate Traffic". Picking a good domain name is hard, but it's a lot easier than starting with a bad domain name and moving your site a few years later.
Where do you design web sites?
Centerville Web Design is based in Centerville, Ohio (Montgomery County), just south of Dayton. We travel to a number of locations for face-to-face consultations, including Springboro, Middletown, Mason, Cincinnati, Covington, Springfield, Troy, Piqua, Columbus, Dublin, Westerville, Reynoldsburg and Grove City.
How long will it take you to design and publish my site?
Uploading Wordpress and Drupal installations is a fairly straightforward affair. Once you've obtained a domain name and hosting account (and given us your login information), we guarantee you'll be up and running in three business days (or your money back), and, often, we'll have your blog up faster than that.
