FAQs on E-Commerce Sites
at Centerville Web Design

What is an e-commerce Web site?

An e-commerce Web site is any site that offers online business transactions. It could be as simple as a "Donate Now" button, or as sophisticated as a large shopping cart system like users find at Amazon.com. Discounts, coupons, tax rates, shipping costs and other factors affect the level of technical sophistication required by the designer of a Web site that offers e-commerce.

What technologies do you utilize for e-commerce projects?

Centerville Web Design offers support for external credit card processing only. Your shopping cart and products will be hosted on your site, but users will actually input their credit card information on an external Web site such as Google Checkout or Paypal.com. This allows for credit card validations. We'll fully integrate your shopping cart with your site's existing design, create product pages for all your products, and set up billing pages at Google Checkout and/or Paypal.

Can I accept credit cards directly on my web site?

Yes. There are a number of companies that offer software to do exactly that. Unfortuantely, the costs are high, and most services require your site or business to have a merchant account with a major bank. You'll also be required to pay a monthly service fee. This approach is recommended for sites with high-volume sales (dozens of sales or more per day). Unfortunately, Centerville Web Design does not currently configure web sites to process credit cards internally.

Can't I set up a shopping cart for my site on my own?

Yes. Google Checkout and/or Paypal will walk you through the process. Integrating the shopping cart with your site's existing design will be up to you.

What is a Google Products data feed?

Google Products is a service that allows users to find products for sale on the Internet. If a user visits Google Products, for instance, and they type in "Women's Reeboks", they'll find more than 100,000 pairs of Women's Reeboks for sale across the Internet. Users can then sort the results by price, seller ratings, product ratings, etc. We'll create your XML-based data feed to submit to Google so that your products will show up there, too.
