Search Engine Optimization (or SEO) is the practice of improving a site's ability to communicate with search engine spiders or robots. These robots troll the Web for text, metadata, images, links, etc. They then apply an algorithm to that data and store it on their servers. This stored data is what gets returned when users perform queries on search engines.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) intends to get your site the ranking it deserves for specific keywords inside search engines. While it's not always possible to get your site into the Top 10 listings for a given keyword, it's important to optimize your site in every way possible so that you'll rank as high as possible for popular keywords, and higher still for less-used keywords.
Note: Search engine optimization does not involve paying search engines for placement. That's called "
Search Engine Marketing" (a service we offer). Rather, search engine optimization intends to improve your ranking in "organic search results" -- namely, the sites that appear in the blue rectangle and below ... not the red rectangles:
